Cockroach Solutions for Your Home & Business

Cockroaches in the home are never a good sign. Since there are a few different species of cockroaches local to our area, we always like to schedule a Free Inspection in order to identify the species and provide the following steps for elimination.

  • American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana): Large (up to 3 inches), reddish-brown, and often found in basements, sewers, and drains.

Some examples of Other Cockroaches covered

    • German Cockroach (Blattella germanica): Small, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. They are the most common indoor species, preferring warm, humid areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
    • Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis): Dark brown to black, often called "water bugs" due to their preference for damp, cool areas.
    • Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa): Smaller, brownish, and prefer warmer, dry locations like upper cabinets or electronics.
    • Smokybrown Cockroach (Periplaneta fuliginosa): Large, dark brown, and capable of flight, often found in trees, shrubs, and mulch.

COCKROACH CONTROL IN WEST VIRGINIA (AMERICAN, SMOKY BROWN & ORIENTAL)

While the German cockroach is the most common indoor species, West Virginia homeowners also encounter several larger cockroach species that typically originate outdoors and invade structures seeking food, moisture, or shelter.

COMMON SPECIES IN WV

American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana): The largest common cockroach, reddish-brown, up to 1.5 inches long. Often found in basements, crawlspaces, utility tunnels, and around floor drains. Despite the name, it likely originated in Africa and arrived in the U.S. via shipping.

Oriental Cockroach: Dark brown to black, about 1 inch long. Prefers very cool, damp environments — floor drains, crawlspaces, and underneath slab-on-grade areas. Sometimes called a "water bug."

Smoky Brown Cockroach: Mahogany brown, about 1.25 inches. Common in wooded areas of WV; enters homes through gaps around rooflines, attic vents, and utility penetrations.

HOW THEY ENTER YOUR HOME

- Floor drains and sewer line gaps (American and Oriental cockroaches)
- Gaps around utility pipes entering the foundation
- Attic vents, ridge caps, and gaps in soffits (Smoky Brown)
- Under exterior doors with worn threshold seals
- Firewood brought inside from the woodpile

WHERE TO INSPECT

Basements and crawlspaces are the primary habitat for these species. Check floor drains, sump pump pits, along foundation walls, and inside utility chases. For smoky brown roaches, inspect the attic and around the roofline exterior.

HOMEOWNER PREVENTION TIPS

1. Install drain covers or screens on floor drains in basements and utility areas.
2. Seal gaps around all utility penetrations into the foundation with hydraulic cement or expanding foam.
3. Keep crawlspace vents clear but screened, and address standing water or moisture issues.
4. Replace worn door sweeps and threshold seals on exterior doors.
5. Stack firewood away from the house and inspect it before bringing it indoors.
6. Eliminate leaf litter and debris piles near the foundation.

HOW WE TREAT OUTDOOR-ORIGINATING COCKROACHES

Because these species live primarily outdoors or in structural voids, treatment focuses on the exterior perimeter and entry points as much as the interior. Pest Control WV applies residual barrier treatments around the foundation, treats crawlspace areas, and addresses any interior harborage sites. Exclusion recommendations are provided to prevent re-entry.

Did you Know?

All cockroaches are fast-moving insects that can fit in tiny cracks and crevices, which helps them evade control and other predatory insects and find shelter, one of the three basic needs of all living things. Cockroaches are scavengers and will feed on anything including human food, leather, glue, and even the dead bodies of other Cockroaches, similar to Carpenter Ants behavior.
