Termite

Eastern Subterranean Termites: The primary threat, living in underground colonies and building mud tubes to access wood in homes.

TERMITE CONTROL IN WEST VIRGINIA

Termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage annually in the United States — more than fires, floods, and storms combined. West Virginia's mix of older wood-framed homes, humid summers, and forested environment makes termite pressure a real concern for property owners across the state.

TERMITE SPECIES IN WV

The Eastern Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes flavipes) is the species responsible for virtually all termite damage in West Virginia. True to their name, they live underground and travel through mud tubes to reach wood above the soil line. A mature colony can contain 60,000 to 1 million workers and can consume a foot of a 2x4 board in approximately 6 months.

WARNING SIGNS OF TERMITE ACTIVITY

- Mud tubes (pencil-width tunnels of soil and debris) running along foundation walls, joists, or piers
- Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
- Buckled or bubbling paint that resembles water damage
- Small piles of frass (termite droppings) that look like sawdust or coffee grounds
- Discarded wings near windowsills or doors — left behind by reproductive swarmers in spring
- Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open (caused by structural warping)

COMMON ENTRY POINTS AND INSPECTION AREAS

Subterranean termites enter structures wherever wood contacts or is near soil. Key inspection areas include:
- Crawlspace piers, girders, and rim joists
- Wood siding and trim that approaches grade level
- Porches and deck posts set in or near soil
- Expansion joints and cracks in concrete slabs
- Areas where soil has been pushed against the foundation (landscaping changes, mulch beds)

HOMEOWNER PREVENTION TIPS

1. Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance between soil grade and any wood on the structure.
2. Fix all leaks and moisture issues in the crawlspace — subterranean termites seek moisture above all else.
3. Install and maintain proper crawlspace ventilation; consider a vapor barrier if not already present.
4. Keep mulch at least 12 inches away from the foundation.
5. Never store scrap wood, cardboard, or cellulose debris in or against the foundation.
6. Have your home inspected annually by a licensed pest control professional — termite damage is often invisible until it becomes severe.

HOW WE TREAT FOR TERMITES

Pest Control WV offers both liquid barrier treatments and monitoring/baiting programs. Liquid treatments (termiticides applied to the soil around and under the structure) create a continuous barrier that kills or repels termites attempting to enter. Bait station programs use stations placed around the perimeter that are monitored regularly — termites carry the bait back to the colony, eliminating it at the source. We also offer Annual WDI (Wood Destroying Insect) Inspections, which are required for most real estate transactions in WV.

Some examples of areas covered

Did you Know?

A single colony of established Termites can consume from a 22 foot section of 2x4 (1 cubic foot) - up 300lbs of wood per year. While Carpenter Ants can cause damage to wood as well, they typically do not consume wood. Instead Carpenter Ants excavate tunnels in order to nest within the galleries, pushing the "frass" out of the entrance holes. There are also some types of Wood Destroying Beetles that typically infest wood that is exposed to moist conditions on homes, in crawlspaces or decks.

These pests can all be damaging to structures and should be dealt with promptly for best results and minimizing repair. When these pests are present, often it means there are underlying conducive conditions that have led to their presence, and will need to be addressed as part of an IPM plan in order to achieve lasting control. Pest Control WV provides you with the information needed via a Pest Assessment with any Wood Destroying Insect Treatment or when you Sign-up for Re-Occurring pest control.
