MOSQUITO CONTROL IN WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia's mountain streams, wetlands, and summer humidity make mosquito pressure a seasonal reality across the state. Beyond the nuisance factor, mosquitoes in WV can transmit West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), and La Crosse Encephalitis — all documented in the region.
COMMON WV MOSQUITO SPECIES
The Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is increasingly common in WV — it bites aggressively during the day, breeds in very small containers of standing water (as little as a bottle cap), and has a shorter flight range than other species, meaning your problem is likely originating on or near your own property. The Common House Mosquito (Culex pipiens) is the primary vector for West Nile Virus and is most active at dawn and dusk.
HOW MOSQUITOES BREED ON YOUR PROPERTY
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed and can complete their life cycle in as little as 7–10 days. Common breeding sites in WV yards:
- Clogged gutters with standing water
- Low spots in the lawn that collect rainwater
- Birdbaths, fountains, and decorative ponds without circulation
- Tarps, buckets, wheelbarrows, and kids' toys left outside
- Tree holes and hollows
- Old tires
- Crawlspace moisture and standing water under the home
HOMEOWNER PREVENTION TIPS
1. Inspect your property after every rain and empty any containers that collected water — even small amounts matter.
2. Clean gutters at least twice a year and ensure they drain properly.
3. Change birdbath water every 3–4 days before eggs can hatch.
4. Use mosquito dunks (Bti) in ornamental ponds and water features that can't be drained.
5. Wear EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus during peak activity times.
6. Install or repair window and door screens.
7. Cut back dense vegetation — adult mosquitoes rest in shaded shrubs and tall grass during the heat of the day.
HOW WE TREAT FOR MOSQUITOES
Pest Control WV offers seasonal mosquito reduction programs that target both adult resting areas and larval breeding sites. Treatments include barrier sprays applied to vegetation, shrubs, and shaded areas where adult mosquitoes rest, as well as larvicide applications to standing water that cannot be eliminated. Regular service on a 3–4 week cycle maintains suppression through the season.
