Alpha-gal Syndrome, or AGS is a delayed-onset of allergic reaction to a sugar molecule found in meat of non-primate mammals such as cattle, deer, pigs and sheep. This molecule, galactose-alpha-a,3-galactose, or (alpha-gal), Is often referred to as the “Red Meat Disease”, and occurs when a persons body reacts to a bite from the Lone-Star Tick.
This bite can transmit bacterium into the body that then introduces alpha-gal. After being bitten, it can take up to 3-6 hours for symptoms to appear, while your immune system essentially develops an allergy to the alpha-gal.
Symptoms Include:
- Hives
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Shortness of breath
- Anaphylaxis (a severe life-threatening allergic reaction)
If you or someone you know has been bitten by a tick recently and experience any of these symptoms, You should Seek Medical Attention IMMEDIATELY.
Why is it Important?
Lone-Star ticks are a generalist species, meaning they are able to thrive in various environments. This makes them aggressive competition for neighboring species in the area. Due to recent winters being milder in West Virginia and other areas of the United States, these ticks have successfully expanded their populations amongst a larger geo-graphical area. Of course, factors such as residential development encroaching on wooding areas and human contact with host species such as rabbits, deer, and other wildlife will always increase the likelihood of exposure. Cases of Lone Star Tick sightings and Alpha-Gal Syndrome have increased here locally in West Virginia as well in the recent months. Be Careful, stay Vigilant against pests!
