Initial Inspection
Our trained technicians will inspect your home or business to locate any wasps including yellow-jackets or hornets present or potential pest entry points. If they are solitary wasps, we can most likely move onto treatment. If Yellow-jackets or Hornets are present, we will need to locate the nest using specialized equipment, and directly treat and/or remove for control depending on size, location and time of season.
Wasp & Hornet Monitoring/Baiting
In rare circumstances there may be an established colony in hard to access areas requiring the use of attractants to locate and or help control the population. Pest Control WV has bait options available to help work to eliminate even the toughest Stinging Insect infestations in hard to access areas if necessary. We have a variety of preferred methods at our disposal in order to prevent resistance, and ensure the colony is eliminated.
Treatment and/or Nest Removal
When we have determined the presence of stinging insects in a certain location that is accessible, we will perform spot treatments if applicable by flushing the pests out of hiding to determine the level of infestation and other possible infestation areas. If the pests located are social such as Yellowjackets or Hornets, we will determine is the nest needs to be removed to prevent further damage or pest activity or if it can be solely treated.
Pest Proofing & Prevention Assessment
Pest Control WV will ensure all the solitary wasps nests are knocked down and the social nests are removed if applicable. We can also perform a Pest Assessment, and provide you with details of how to prevent a stinging insect infestation in the future if you signup for re-occurring services, which will also include any other pest entry points or conducive conditions we may have found around the exterior of the structure.
Wasp Control/prevention for Your Home & Business
Cockroaches in the home are never a good sign. Since there are a few different species of cockroaches local to our area, we always like to schedule a Free Inspection in order to identify the species and provide the following steps for elimination.
- Paper Wasps (Polistes spp.): Slim, narrow-waisted, and often brown or yellow. They build open-comb, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, and in sheds.
- Eastern Cicada-killer Wasp (Sphecius speciosus): Very large, solitary wasps (up to 1.5 inches) that resemble massive yellowjackets. They burrow into lawns and are generally non-aggressive toward humans.
- Mud Daubers: Solitary wasps that build small, tube-like, or round nests out of mud on buildings. They are non-aggressive and rarely sting.
WASP CONTROL IN WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia's warm summers and abundant outdoor spaces make wasps a common and sometimes dangerous nuisance. Unlike bees, most wasp species can sting repeatedly and become highly aggressive when they perceive a threat to their nest. For households with members who are allergic to stings, an active wasp nest near living areas is a genuine medical risk.
WASP SPECIES IN WV
Paper Wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests from chewed wood fiber. Nests are typically found under eaves, in attic vents, on decks and pergolas, and in shrubs. They are moderately aggressive and will sting if the nest is disturbed. Mud Daubers are solitary wasps that build distinctive tube-shaped mud nests on building exteriors, in garages, and in crawlspaces. They are generally non-aggressive and rarely sting. Cicada Killers are large, intimidating solitary wasps that burrow in the ground. Despite their size, females are non-aggressive unless directly handled. Potter Wasps create small clay pot-shaped nests.
WHERE WASPS BUILD NESTS
Common nesting sites on WV structures:
- Under roof overhangs, soffits, and eaves
- Inside attic vents and gable vents
- Deck and pergola rafters and joists
- Behind shutters and around window frames
- Inside wall voids through gaps in siding
- In outbuildings, sheds, and garages
- In dense shrubs and ornamental plantings near the home
HOMEOWNER PREVENTION TIPS
1. Inspect your property perimeter in early spring — small nests found in March or April can be removed before the colony grows to thousands of workers.
2. Seal openings in soffits, eaves, and exterior walls to prevent wasps from establishing nests inside the structure.
3. Screen attic, gable, and foundation vents.
4. Keep garbage cans tightly sealed and away from living areas — sweet organic material attracts wasps.
5. Avoid wearing bright floral patterns and sweet-smelling perfumes when spending extended time outdoors.
6. Never attempt to remove an established nest without protective equipment — disturbing a large nest can trigger a mass stinging event.
HOW WE TREAT WASP NESTS
Pest Control WV treats active wasp nests with fast-acting residual insecticides applied directly to the nest and adjacent harboring areas. We treat at dawn or dusk when wasps are least active and most workers are in the nest. After treatment, nests are removed where safely accessible to discourage re-use the following season. Exclusion recommendations are provided to prevent nests from re-establishing in the same location.
Some examples of Other Yellowjackets & Hornets covered
- Yellowjackets (Vespula spp.): Small, fast-flying, bee-sized insects with distinct black and yellow bands. They are highly aggressive, especially in late summer, and often nest in the ground, wall voids, or under structures. Common species include German and Aerial yellowjackets.
- Bald-faced Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata): Black with white markings on their face and body. They build large, papery, hanging nests in trees or shrubs and are highly aggressive when defending their nest.
- European Hornets (Vespa crabro): Large, brownish hornets with yellow stripes, often active at night and attracted to lights. They build nests in hollow trees or dark, protected areas.

Did You Know?
There are more than 30,000 species of wasps around the world. Most people know about the top 3 categories we put them under, Paper wasps, Yellow-Jackets, and Hornets. Well, the first two are wasps...which you may find under the eaves, or in your walls, or crawls. However as for Hornets here in West Virginia, we only have one true hornet, the European Hornet. The Bald Faced Hornet, is actually a species of Yellow-Jacket, with white markings rather than yellow and a longer body.
