Carpenter Bees & Other Wood Destroying Pests can do a lot of damage, Quickly. Call Today.
Carpenter Bees are often quite a nuisance. They often target exposed wood, including areas of eaves, decking and exterior of homes that lack paint and stain finish. This doesn't mean paint or stain will always prevent these pests, however, it certainly can help. Carpenter Bee tunnels can be an eye sore, or a feeding ground for woodpeckers when they lay larvae. Pest Control WV offers treatments for the toughest wood destroying pests. Text Us, and protect your home Termites and more.
CARPENTER BEE CONTROL IN WEST VIRGINIA
Carpenter bees are a common nuisance for West Virginia homeowners, particularly those with unpainted or weathered wood on decks, pergolas, fences, fascia boards, and siding. While a single carpenter bee causes limited damage, returning populations drilling new tunnels season after season can significantly weaken wood structures over time.
IDENTIFYING CARPENTER BEES
Carpenter bees closely resemble bumble bees in size and coloration, but the top of their abdomen is smooth and shiny black rather than fuzzy and yellow. Males (which are often aggressive in hovering behavior around entrances) have no stinger. Females can sting but rarely do unless directly handled.
SIGNS OF CARPENTER BEE ACTIVITY
- Perfectly round entry holes (approximately 1/2 inch in diameter) in bare or weathered wood
- Coarse sawdust and yellowish frass below entry holes
- Yellow pollen and fecal staining around hole entrances
- Male bees hovering aggressively near eaves, fascia, or deck rails in spring
HOW THEY SELECT NESTING SITES
Carpenter bees strongly prefer unpainted, weathered softwoods. Common target areas in WV homes:
- Deck fascia boards and railings
- Pergola and arbor beams
- Unpainted wood fences
- Eaves, fascia, and soffit boards
- Window trim and door frames
- Log or cedar siding on cabins and outbuildings
HOMEOWNER PREVENTION TIPS
1. Paint or varnish all exposed wood surfaces — carpenter bees strongly avoid painted wood.
2. Fill existing holes with steel wool, then caulk over them in late summer after the season's bees have emerged and before new eggs are laid.
3. Apply hardwood overlays or aluminum flashing to wood surfaces most frequently targeted.
4. Hang decoy "carpenter bee traps" near active areas — they are surprisingly effective at capturing returning females.
5. Inspect eaves and fascia every spring for new holes before the season's activity begins.
WOOD PECKER SECONDARY DAMAGE
An often-overlooked consequence of carpenter bee infestations: woodpeckers. Downy and Pileated woodpeckers in WV actively excavate carpenter bee tunnels to feed on larvae inside, causing additional structural damage to the surrounding wood. If you notice woodpecker damage near bee entry holes, the infestation is likely well-established.
HOW WE TREAT CARPENTER BEES
Pest Control WV treats active carpenter bee holes with insecticide dust applied directly into tunnels, which eliminates larvae and adults inside. Exterior residual treatments deter new activity. We treat in spring through summer when bees are most active, and recommend follow-up sealing and painting of treated holes after the season to prevent re-colonization.

Did you Know?
A single colony of established Termites can consume from a 22 foot section of 2x4 (1 cubic foot) - up 300lbs of wood per year. While Carpenter Ants can cause damage to wood as well, they typically do not consume wood. Instead Carpenter Ants excavate tunnels in order to nest within the galleries, pushing the "frass" out of the entrance holes. There are also some types of Wood Destroying Beetles that typically infest wood that is exposed to moist conditions on homes, in crawlspaces or decks.
These pests can all be damaging to structures and should be dealt with promptly for best results and minimizing repair. When these pests are present, often it means there are underlying conducive conditions that have led to their presence, and will need to be addressed as part of an IPM plan in order to achieve lasting control.
